Lewes enters world of wind energy

The nacelle rises to the top of the turbine tower.

The new 400-foot wind turbine can be seen from many locations.

In a period of five days, Gamesa Technology Corp. crews erected a 256-foot tower, placed a nacelle atop the tower and installed a trio of 144-foot blades on the 2-megawatt wind turbine that stands at the University of Delaware’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus. Gamesa officials said the mechanical and software installations would be completed by May 7, but the turbine would not be operational and connected to the electrical grid for another six to eight weeks. The turbine, which will also be used for research, is expected to power the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment and also provide some electricity to the City of Lewes. The university and Gamesa are sharing the cost of the $5 million project.
